Report: The Fall River valley is warming up and the river is beginning to come to life. With this warming trend the insects should begin coming off soon. Most anglers are concentrating on other streams in the area, but this is one you should keep on your radar for May. We have a trip on the books this weekend and will report back on what is going on. Hat Creek Report

Report: This past Monday saw a good PMD hatch happening north of the 299 bridge and some Yellow Sallies up by the PH2 Riffle. Day to day you will see different things happening, but on the sunny days you will definitely see PMDs coming off. Callibaetis and Gray Drakes are in the offing as well. On cloudy days make sure you have Green Drakes in your box. Wink, wink. Spring is happening, we have a storm over the next few days, and you don't want to miss the Salmonfly hatch beginning next month. Bring your Hackle Stackers, Griffith's Gnats, and a stealthy approach. The PMD Challenged in #14, Milla Time May PMD #16, Sparkle Stacker PMD #18, and the Mayfly Cripple Limeston #16 are good dries during a hatch. Nymph-wise, the BP Weiss nymph, X-Mays in #18, or Sweet Peas are great to have along with some Peaches n' Green. And please remember to respect other anglers and the spawning Rainbows.

Klamath River Report
Updated: January 11, 2024
Report: It will be a while before the Klamath will be clear enough to fish. This is good news! The remaining dams will be removed over the next six to seven months and the anadromous species, Steelhead and Chinook Salmon, will once again have access to cold springs and spawning grounds above. Preparations to stage equipment and move the hatchery was completed in the last couple of weeks, and the lake drawdowns have begun. The release from Iron Gate was bumped up to 2,500 CFS and there is a lot of sediment coming down the river. We will keep you posted on the progress of this largest of it's type project through the year.

Lower Sacramento River Report

Report: The river continues to clear and is fishing better each day. The warming weather has the PMDs beginning to come off in greater numbers, we have seen bigger Caddis emergences as well. The top end above Hwy 44 has closed and will open again on August 1st. Figuring out the bite has been somewhat problematic for some. The Bird's Nest in #16 has been a good fly as well as brown Rubberlegs in #6 or #8. Keep your Crystal HBIs and Peaches N' Creams ready. Some fish are taking egg patterns. Access To the Lower Sacramento
The Lower Sacramento has many publicly accessible areas with good wading opportunities when the flows are below 7,500 CFS. Stop by the shop and we'd be happy to point you in the right direction.
Fishing Large Rivers Can be Frustrating
There are many great places you can get in and wade this blue ribbon tail water. Having said that, the absolute best method to fish the Sac is from a drift boat. Aside from being able to access all of the water, you can fish the long runs on a dead, perfect drift which is deadly on these legendary wild rainbows. And who would be a better oarsman than one of our Professional Guides? They know every nook and cranny of the river, what insects are and will be hatching, and the setups and methods that will get you onto the fish of a lifetime.
Recommended Equipment & Setups
Most of our fishing, whether from a drift boat, or wading when the releases are low enough, is done dead drifting nymphs. The Fly Shop's Signature Indicator Rod is nine and a half feet of indicator nymph fishing perfection designed by our professional staff right here on the Lower Sac. McCloud River Report

Report: While it is big on the lower end, releases from Lake McCloud are a steady 250 CFS and the tributaries are adding an additional 300 CFS by Ah-Di-Na. The clarity on the lake gage is very good, so this should be a good option. The road in to Ash Camp is open and the only thing you should keep an eye on is Highway 89, we have one more storm heading our way this weekend and after that it will be warming up. A walk-in customer reports you can get in to Ah-Di-Na, be prepared for fallen trees and other obstacles if you go. There has been some good midge and Blue Wing Olive hatches, nymphing with the small, black flies is the best way to hook up. The BP Weiss, Two-Bit Hooker, and black Micro May are all working. Other good flies to throw right now are Rubberlegs, brown or black in #6 or #8, Perdigons and Olive Hotspots. This spring should be a great one. Cloudy days will bring the Green Drakes out, and then the PMDs. Pit River Report

Report:
The river is pretty dirty right now and with the flows bumped up as well, we can't recommend fishing The Pit in the foreseeable future. For reference, flows from Britton on Pit 3 are roughly 440 CFS and 760 CFS in Big Bend. We would recommend a lot of caution if you do go and fish. Don't expect to hit all of the spots you normally would. As the weather calms down and the weather warms through April we expect to see good Salmonfly and Golden Stone hatches, and down through Pit 4 PMDs and Callibaetis. This is a great river to fish a Euro rod and we highly recommend it. Be careful though, this can be a slippery river to wade. We recommend a wading staff when fishing the Pit.
Be aware that the flows on the Pit can and will change without notice, so definitely check before you go! And be prepared to get out when the river begins to rise.

Trinity River Expand
Trinity River Report

Report:
Spring pulse flows have begun and the river will only continue to grow in size over then next week. The peak will occur on Wednesday, April 24th at a targeted release of 8,500 CFS. This will be the last weekend you will have a shot at an adult steelie between now and sometime in July when they ramp the releases down to a manageable flow. There are a lot of smolts now and just a few adults. With all of the tributaries flowing a lot of fish are up in them spawning and we should see a lot of fish in the future which is great. Large, dark flies and egg patterns are what's getting fish. Mercer's Psycho Prince in purple or orange, Little Black Stones and Duracells will work for your dropper. Egg patterns will be a great choice if/when the river colors up. For the swing fisherman, it will be a good idea to put on your Skagit floating head with a tip to swing a black Burnt Chicken or Hoh Bo Spey. With the BoR fixing to commence the spring pulse flows soon make sure you check the flows at Lewiston before you make the trip.

Report:
With the warming weather and the snowpack up in this watershed, we are beginning to see signs of runoff. The river is high from top to bottom. The flows dropped down to around 1,600 CFS Monday, but are ramping up daily and sit around 2,000 CFS at the Delta gage. We'll get some rain through Saturday, so should see another bump from that storm. If you would like to go, be super careful at these flows, you should take a look at heading up to Dunsmuir or above. For those who like to swing, now would be a good time to get out the micro-Spey and give it a shot as there are large Rainbows heading up from the lake. Sculpins should be on the menu for the lakers, Barr's Slumpbuster in olive and black are two good options, a Dalai Lama in olive & white or The Mob in olive are other good patterns. Up top above Simms the small black flies, #18-20 black Zebra Midges, the BP Weiss nymphs, Jigged X-Mays and any Perdigon you have in your box will work well. Blue Wing Olives and midges will be good nymphs to try in the mornings, olive and black X-Mays and S&Ms along with the BP Weiss Nymph and Olive Hotspots.

Baum Lake Report

Report: Baum has been a good spot to get a great workout fighting trout. In addition to the planted fish, there are a lot of wild Rainbows and we hear there are some very large fish down by the dam. Callibaetis are coming off in greater numbers especially up towards the dam. Sparse patterns work well here for these spring creek fish, the Sparkle Stacker Patterns are good, also the Griffith's Gnat is a staple. For nymphs, any of the PMD and Baetis patterns like the smaller #18 Olive Hotspot or the Sweet Pea are dependable patterns. Don't forget your midge and Wooly Bugger boxes. Balanced Leeches in black and olive under an indicator when the wind picks up can save the day here. Report: We haven't received any recent reports from Lewiston. This could be a good place to go in the spring with good Callibaetis hatches and midges coming off in droves. If the visibility is decent, this could be a good destination to hook a ton of rainbows.

Keswick Reservoir Report

Report: The reservoir is fishing well with a lot of rainbows coming to eat your balance leech. Fish it on a sinking line toward the banks. Other good options are baetis nymphs dead drifted under an indicator, the BP Weiss Nymph, black and olive X-Mays, Two-Bit Hookers and the venerable Mercer's Micro-May are all in the mix for this one. Your box should always be stocked with red and black Zebra Midges in #16 - 20 when heading out to Keswick. Watch out for the rocks and bring your best hook-set!

Report: The lake has warmed somewhat and the Spots are moving into the shallows to spawn. Fish are coming to Float N' Flys and Balanced Leeches. Fish towards the banks with a crayfish-colored Balanced Leech or a Shad Float N' Fly and watch for your indicator to tip. A sinking line fished toward the shore so you can bounce a crawdad pattern down the banks will also be effective. Bounce a Concussion Cray, Jiggy Worm or Grim Reaper on the rocks and the spots will swoop it up.

Report: The lake is a good option if you are in the area, with intermittent releases from Trinity Lake, fishing right below the outflow can produce some consistent hookups. With the amount of Damsels and Dragonflies in this system, Wooly Buggers stripped in brown, black and olive, and Balanced Leeches the same color stripped or fished under an indicator are solid approaches. And Zebra Midges in #16 - 18, black and red, are a staple here.

Report: The bite in Dinosaurland has slowed quite a bit recently. A good storm could get this place rockin' again. Dead drifting midges just off the bottom is the main gig now, find the bottom and rig appropriately by shortening up. Rich's Moo Midge and the Chironomid Bomber are the top choices here. Stripping a Popcorn Beetle or Pyramid Minnow on a sinking line will allow you to switch things up for variety. Balanced Leeches under an indicator are also a good tactic for the big Cutts.

Basically, with the ice out and having rested since early October, the fish are eating literally whatever you put in front of them and if you aren't throwing dry flies, you are missing a great opportunity. At just under 950 CFS it is still a little big, but the clarity is Chef's Kiss perfect with just the right amount of that nice green hue. Luk Lake Report

Report: Trout and bass are on the agenda at Luk with the bass increasingly falling prey to top water offerings. Zack's Balanced Damsel or any of the olive / brown Balanced Leeches will work fished under 3' under an indicator if there is any chop. The mornings have a heavy midge hatch and anglers dead drifting or stripping #16 - 18 Zebra Midges in brown or red are getting hooked up. Damsel Leeches and the balanced version will reign supreme and if you see fish taking insects on the surface rumor has it a beetle pattern will be a good fly to throw. Just sayin'. Rock Creek Lake Report

Report: The lake has warmed quite a bit, the visibility is greatly improved and we are already seeing some good mayfly hatches happening. Early Callibaetis emergences have the fish cruising the dam and east shore. Fishing a #14-16 Pheasant Tail on an Intermediate Line is working good. Mahogany Duns will be emerging later, a good fly for this is the #16 dark Missing Link, and you should have Adams/Parachute Adams in sizes #14 - 18 to cover your bases, and #14-16 dark Missing Links will also cover you for any ant or termite falls that could be just around the corner. To round out your early season box make sure you have your bugger box and black, brown and olive Balanced Leeches. Some very large Rainbows have come to the net this season already. We've got some prime availability in the next couple of months, give Bryan or Chris a call if you would like to set up a trip to the lake!

Sugar Creek Ranch Report

Report: The insects are hatching and the Sugar Creek Rainbows are on the hunt! The Callibaetis are coming off on most days and these are the big ones. Bring some Adams and Missing Links to sight fish for the cruising Bows, #14-16. While they are not hatching, Damselfly nymphs are abundant, so bring a bunch of the Balanced Damsels, and Black, Brown and Olive Balanced Leeches fished under indicators are something you should always have. Zebra Midges in red #18 are also working well. Remember, these fish can be spooked on clear, bright days, so a little stealth per small creek fishing can go a long ways to fooling the large rainbows in Sugar Creek!
